Pastor Keith Kirkpatrick

PURPOSE (how we accomplish our mission):

Love God. Love People.

Journey believes the church is the local expression of the face of Jesus. The way the world will see God will be through Jesus Christ living in and through us. The core values are found in the thoughtful living of each member of the Journey Community. Our mission comes from a place in the Bible where love is being described. The writer (Paul) says, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV)

Transform the world – starting in Bend on a journey through faith, hope, & love in Jesus.

Faith | who?

Journey loves Bend, Oregon . What’s not to love? Amazing mountain range, great snowboarding, spectacular rivers, dozens of lakes, wonderful seasons, and a city filled with creative arts and spectacular coffee.

More than anything, we love the people of Bend. Bend is a community and we want to make it the best community to live in. Journey is made up of people that love their friends, co-workers, neighbors, family, and especially our baristas.

Hope | how?

Jesus once said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this; that you would lay down your life for your friends.” (John 15:12-13 ESV) Journey has a dream of sharing God’s love by serving others.

Jesus said of himself, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 ESV) Jesus was describing his own life – a life of service, one that demonstrated true love.

We believe that faith, hope and love are best demonstrated when lived out (serving
others). Journey serves a variety of individuals, groups, and communities weekly.

Love | why?

Our success at Journey is measured by life change. We believe God loves you just as you are. However, he loves you too much to allow you to remain the same. A life that encounters Jesus Christ will discover a faith that produces hope because of love. We are motivated to change by grace not guilt.

This is WHY! It’s all about Jesus. Jesus loves YOU.

Unfortunately many people have unjustly called themselves Christians. We believe the Bible says that we become “new creations” when we journey with Jesus. This is because Jesus forgives us, sets us free, and allows us to have: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. A new person is better than a nice person. A new person happens because of faith, hope, and love in Jesus Christ.

Relentlessly Real:
It’s too easy to be fake, put on a face. We strive to be real, allowing God’s love to change us, while transparently admitting our humanness and weakness. There is beauty in transparency. God loves you as you are. However, God will never leave you the same.

Community Creators:
Committed to doing life together & loving together. Everyone is priceless and irreplaceable. We are better together. Continually, creatively striving to be a community that changes Bend.

Grace Givers:
Experiencing God’s grace overwhelms us to share it with others. Grace reminds us that it’s never too late with God and it’s never to early. The Bible teaches us that Jesus embodied grace (John 1:17). Grace is best experienced in action. Therefore our actions will speak louder than our words.

Guerrilla Lovers:
Adopting a metaphor of war may not be the best thing for a value… but, we did it!  In Guerrilla War an army ambushes an enemy when they least expect it and they use the resources they have (may not be a lot).   Guerrilla love is surprising people with love when they least expect it (or deserve it).  It’s understanding that you don’t need to have all the resources in the world to change the world (1 John).  It’s living out the ways of Jesus in tangible ways.  Like a little seed that grows into a huge tree (Jesus shared that one – Matthew 17:20)! We believe Guerrilla love is manifested in every area of life.  We love because God first loved us.  (1 John 4:19)

In the Beginning …

Journey Church was birthed on February 21, 2010.  We were supported and commissioned by New Hope Church in Bend with a clear vision: to do what’s not being done in order to reach people not being reached.

From our inception, Journey sought to be a church for those who don’t like church in an effort to join God on His mission: redeem, reconcile, restore and rebuild lives in Bend and beyond.  We regularly teach that it is never too late with God! Pastor Keith Kirkpatrick knew that Bend didn’t need just another church.

During our first year, Journey relocated 3 times.  Journey began as a mobile church and met at Bend High School, Regal Theatres in the Old Mill, and then back at Bend High.

The Church Under the Bar …

After one year of being mobile, Journey Church moved to a more permanent location in downtown Bend, the heart of the city.  This move was a bit unorthodox for a church.  We chose to meet under a bar.  Not just any bar, it was a strip club.  Perfect. Isn’t that where Jesus would go?

After months of meeting under the strip club, they shut down. A new night club reopened (without the strippers) and Journey continued to grow as the “church under the bar.”  On Easter of 2013, Journey rented the bar and had church “in the bar.”

This changed everything.  Journey continued to see that doing things that have not been done requires risks. With every risk for God, comes a great reward.  We were a part of God doing something different, great, and it was only the beginning. Less than one year later (Halloween of 2013), the night club shut down.

Restoration …

In early 2014 Journey officially made the move into the space that had previously operated as a night club, a strip club, and originally was an Elk’s Club meeting space.  Journey has experienced the reality that God can restore anyone or any place for His glory. We are now in the process of renovating, restoring and repurposing the former bar into our auditorium/sanctuary.

Through this journey, over 100 people have been baptized, hundreds of lives changed, and there are so many miracle stories of God transforming lives.

Journey has a saying, “It’s all about Jesus!”  Journey is a church that loves Jesus, follows Jesus and is led by Jesus.  This is not always easy, but it’s always worth it.  Following Jesus is rarely what you think it is, it’s sort of like church upside down.  We would not have conceived of the stories that God has done and continues to do through Journey Church.

With Jesus, there is hope for everyone.

Our mission is to transform the world, starting in Bend on a journey through faith, hope and love in Jesus. We are all on a journey of faith. You are welcome to join us on your journey as we regularly gather together to unpack the Bible in an authentic, powerful, and life-transforming way and worship the one true God.

The best is yet to come!
